When we feel content it means we are taking time to enjoy the simple things in life. Sharing an ice cream cone with that special someone, sitting around the fire pit laughing with friends, being at the beach on a hot summer’s day and feeling the salt air invigorating our very soul.
As you age you won’t remember all the crazy days of running around trying to get all the errands done and kids where they need to be. You probably also won’t remember racing the clock for deadlines to please bosses that really didn’t give a damn about you, or pulling your hair out in traffic jams. But what you will remember is the sweet simple things you experienced along the way.
The simple moments of life are what make life worthwhile. All the other stuff is what we do to survive. We are all busy, but the more time we take to relax and enjoy the simple things in life, the more we will feel contentment. And contentment means we’re happy and that must mean we’re doing life right.
“Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” ~ Lao Tzu
You can’t change your past, but you sure can change your present for the better. Life is short and the future is not promised to anyone. Every positive present moment we possess makes whatever future we have that much better.
I agree, it’s hard to accept some moments when they are downright horrible, but fighting against those times gets you nowhere. I think it’s better to just go with it. “This too willpass,” is a saying that’s been around for a long time and one my grandmother used to say. It’s a good saying and one maybe we should keep in mind when life gets tough.
In accepting the moment as it is you are surrendering–not giving up, there is a difference. Surrendering is letting go of having to control every little thing in your life. You are learning to flow through your life so you can enjoy all of it fully.
Every day I am reminded how precious life is and how short it can be. So I take the good with the bad–the cold rainy days with the glorious sunny warm days and treat them equally. After all, they are both part of my life and I own them.
Bad things come, but they also go, and then good things take their place. Don’t use up all your energy fighting those bad moments. Just go with it and the good moments will come.
