Past, Present, Future

You can’t change your past, but you sure can change your present for the better. Life is short and the future is not promised to anyone. Every positive present moment we possess makes whatever future we have that much better.

Sail on my friends.

Problems

MET-1712-PMR-b

To me this quote from Eckhart Tolle means that problems really can’t live in our present moments because problems usually occur when we live in the past or future and are simply not being present. If we look back, we can probably find something to make into a problem and bring it into the present moment by thinking about it, but it shouldn’t be in our present moment because it was already there once and now it belongs in the past where it should be forgotten.

If we look into the future we could create something to worry about by dragging it into the present, but why do we want to do that when we really have no idea what the future holds for us until it arrives and becomes the present. Fear sometimes brings us to the future.

So, what we actually have is only what’s happening right now and soon that now will also be in the past, and only starts to be a problem when we keep bringing it up over and over again. As crazy as this all sounds, our problems can’t survive in our present moments if we are truly present because we would solve an issue before it becomes a problem or discard it. There is not enough fuel to actually be living in the moment and keep a so-called problem alive. It’s only when we go looking for trouble by looking backward or forward and over thinking that we give negative energy to our present moment by creating problems that grow into monsters filling our brains with misery and giving us sleepless nights of trying to figure things out— what went wrong, or what might go wrong. And don’t forget, when we do this stuff we are no longer in the present moment.

If we could figure all this out for once and for all, think about all the happiness and great relationships we would have. We could experience real forgiveness and love, and we wouldn’t make ourselves and everyone else so unhappy. Life would become richer and peaceful for all.

Okay, this all sounds great, but since this is not a fairytale story where we will all just start this right now and life will suddenly change for the better, let’s call this a work in progress and strive to live in the present and keep the past and future out of our lives the best we can. In doing this, maybe the world can become a better place because we’ve become better people.

Listen not only with your ears, but your eyes—your whole body.

Listen to the voice within.

“Listen to your heart. It knows everything.”  ~ Paulo Coelho

Listen to what’s not being said; to the silence all around you.

“The inspiration you seek is already within you. Be silent and listen.” ~ Rumi

Listen to nature it’s desperately trying to get your attention and tell you something you need to hear.

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” ~ Ram Dass

Listen carefully to the children.

“People start to heal the moment they feel heard.” ~ Cheryl Richardson

Pay attention to the children because they are the future and the last hope for this precious planet.

“The voice of the sea speaks to the soul.” ~ Kate Chopin

Live for Today

Live for today and tomorrow will take care of itself. That sounds like good advice as long as you are not foolish and reckless, but mindful instead. Living each day with the purpose of actually showing up and not thinking about tomorrow or trying to replay the mistakes of yesterday is a goal we should all strive for. We don’t have to do great things each day, but we should try to enjoy each day as it comes along.

It’s true not all our todays are pleasant ones. Sometimes they are actually horrible and stressful, but that doesn’t mean that we should discount them. Every day we get is a day that belongs to only us and a day that we are here on planet Earth. Even if it isn’t the best of days we should embrace it and show up the best we can. When our horrible today slips into the past of yesterday we need to let it go and never look back. We then need to welcome our new present today and maybe it will just be a much better day.

In letting the previous day leave take a moment and see if there was a lesson to be learned, or wisdom to take in. In doing this no day goes away without preparing us for all the future days to come. Also, once you do this with the exiting day there will never be a need to hang onto the past. You will be able to just let it go and die off. And die it should because as you already know, if you don’t let the past go there is no way that you can truly live for today.

“Yesterday is ashes.

Tomorrow is green wood.

Only today does the fire burn brightly.”

– Eskimo Saying

What Are You Waiting For?

“Sometimes you have to stop thinking so much and just go where your heart takes you.”  ~ Unknown

“Do it now. The future is promised to no one.”  ~ Wayne Dyer

“Live the way your soul yearns to sing.”  ~ Melanie Werenczak

So, what are you waiting for? There’s no limousine coming to get you. No bus going your way. And hitchhiking will never get you where you want to go. It’s just you kid on your own. Only you can make it happen, but I know you can do it, and I think you do too.

What are you waiting for? Get going!

You Can Live Your Best Life

Are you living the best life you can? Some people get so despondent that they choose to end their life even before it really has a chance to get started. Others are miserable every day and just get by feeling the pain of their life minute by minute. And then there are those who just seem to embrace their life no matter what. They are the ones who are happy to be alive. Have they found some sort of secret to living?

Maybe there is a secret to living a happy, stress free, peaceful life. A secret so great that not even our parents knew about it. Well, it’s not really a secret but instead a really simple rule. This rule is so simple that people pass right over it never giving it much thought. It’s simply living in the “Now” of your life. I know, I’ve talked about this lots of times, but it’s just too simple to remember. Living in the past of could’ve or should’ve, or the scary future of what if’s, will drive you crazy and you won’t be enjoying your life of What Is.

I volunteer in a bereavement program and I’m constantly aware of many souls dying. It does make me think about death and life probably more than the average person. One of the things I keep thinking about is the quality of our lives. How important it is to fully live and not be hampered by anger, bitterness, hatred, fear, jealousy, etc. And I’ve said this before: “Life Is Short.” Actually too short for some. You may not be beautiful or handsome on the outside, but what about the inside? You might not be rich or famous or a brainy, or even very talented, but being happy, stress free, and at peace with your life is everyone’s right. And the only one that can keep that from you, is “You.”

Don’t ever let life get you down, let it pick you up instead. After all, it’s all about the decisions you make for yourself. Your life is precious so handle it with the utmost care, and go out and live every second that you have.

“Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes and dance.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

The Presentness of Happiness

“Memo to Self: The less present I am, the less happiness I will find.” ~ Robert Holden

In dark days with all that gloominess hanging down where is happiness to be found?

Happiness is always found in the present moment of your life. You will never find it thinking about the future, and you will absolutely never find it rifling around in the past. Future and past thinking have the ability of only making you sad. But staying in the present moment, feeling gratitude, and acceptance of your life will bring you into happiness.

Happiness is also found in the love you give out. It’s impossible to feel those dark days when you are loving those around you. It’s impossible to feel so down when you are practicing kindness. And how can you feel sad when you see a child giggling with delight, or witnessing one of nature’s little critters doing their crazy slapsticks.

Depression can cover you like a big wet blanket holding you down until you drown. In order to keep that from happening you need to fight back and tap into your happiness before you can’t be found. Who is that sitting next to you? Why, it’s happiness just waiting to be picked.

On your journey you are meant to feel the warmth of being happy, and you are meant to spread that happiness all around. Smile when you start to feel sad and see how that simple smile can make you feel so much better instead of feeling down.

“Happiness, not in another place but this place … not for another hour, but this hour.” ~ Walt Whitman

This is your life, make it a happy one.
