The Mind

Your mind can make you very sick if you are constantly feeding it negativity and stressing. It is my belief that the whole body works together as a team and if one part is sick the rest is affected too. I think we’ve all seen that when we are physically sick and our mental state is off too. So, it stands to reason that if we are too often stressed with depression, anger, worry, hate, just to name a few, we are going to get physically sick.

Here are two segments from health articles:

WebMD, “How Worrying Affects the Body,” it stated: “Chronic worry and emotional stress can trigger a host of health problems. The problem occurs when fight or flight is triggered daily by excessive worrying and anxiety. The fight or flight response causes the body’s sympathetic nervous system to release stress hormones such as cortisol. These hormones can boost blood sugar levels and triglycerides (blood fats) that can be used by the body for fuel. The hormones also cause physical reactions.” That certainly can’t be good for us.

The Mayo Clinic, “Positive Thinking: Reduce Stress By Eliminating Negative Self Talk,” stated: “Some studies show that personality traits like optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being. The positive thinking that typically comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits.” Some of the health benefits listed were: Increased life span, lower rates of depression, greater resistance from the common cold, and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

We all know that eating the right foods and exercising are very important, but we sometimes forget about how our mind is processing our feelings and how much we are stressing. We need to laugh and relax more. We need to stop taking everything in our life so serious. Stress can shorten and affect the quality of our lives.

Life is full of problems, but no problem was ever solved by stressing about it. A fulfilled life is what we all want, but that won’t happen if we let our minds make us sick. It may take decades for all the negative thinking to catch up, but once it does, the impact will be a life changer.

Be gentle to yourself, and learn to handle stress. Your life will become richer for it.

I love the way you express your thoughts. Being self critical is so damaging to your soul and inner peace.

I really like your inspiring and encouraging words.

How true!…..I always think of that saying “you are what you eat” and think it needs the addition of “and you are what you think”. Our minds and self talk can be encouraging and supportive or negative and damaging……here’s to happy thoughts and less stress.

  3. Thank you Michelle, your blog is a pleasure to read !
