Do you remember as a child how effortless being happy was? Even if you had a bad childhood you did have times of being happy. We didn’t really think about it as kids, and we didn’t search for it either. This happiness just sort of happened. We would just be playing with our friends, or be alone and the silliest things would bring giggles and sheer delight to us. What happened to it when we grew up? What happened to our happiness?
Somehow when we grew up we thought it was something we had to find. It now wasn’t something that happened to us, it was something we had to search for. We searched everywhere for it, and used many means to find it. Sometimes we were lucky and there it was, but the quantities were in short supply, and it never seemed to last long. Where did it go?
It didn’t go anywhere. Happiness has always been with us, but as adults we get so caught up in our egos and beaten down by life that we forget how to feel it. We’re too busy to play; we have no time for giggles. Being an adult we have problems to solve and bills to pay. The world is a mess and so are we. We’re a mess because we want to be happy, but we can’t seem to be.
We have to stop searching for happiness and allow ourselves to feel as we once did when we were children. But because we’re adults we have to give ourselves permission to be happy and maybe even create it. We have to notice the funny things in life. We have to learn to laugh a great big belly laugh and even be silly.
Sometimes when I’m feeling much too serious and life seems so complicated, I close my eyes and concentrate on the warm feeling in my chest, and out of nowhere, I’m smiling. The warm feeling is the joy in my heart of being alive. I’ve learned that I’m here to be happy and so are you. I know that I don’t have to search for it because it lives in my heart as it does in yours.
Happiness will never be in short supply if you just allow yourself to feel it every day. There doesn’t have to be a reason to be happy. It isn’t anything that you have to measure out, or earn. You just have to feel it. Happiness belongs to you and it’s yours forever.
Even in times of stress and sadness, close your eyes and let yourself feel the warmth of joy filling your heart. You’re alive and you have a right to be happy, so allow yourself to be just that.
Sending love to all
